A visit to Ajaokuta Steel Plant which is 98% completed and will transform Nigeria into a world power, has been lying helpless for close to 40 years. Ajaokuta Steel Project is located on a 24,000 hectares Greenfield land mass.
The Steel Plant is built on 800 hectares of land, on three platforms dovetailing into the bank of the River Niger. Therefore, there is vast land for expansion into the 2nd and 3rd phases of the plant.
3-Phase commissioning sequence was adopted for implementing the project:
Phase I: 1.3million tonnes of steel per year;
Phase II: 2.6million tonnes of steel per year;
Phase III: 5.2million tonnes of steel per year.
Phase I is estimated to be over 98% technically ready by 1994; meaning that 98% by weight of equipment and Steel Structures as per original design have been erected before the Global Contract with TPE was determined.
It was conceived and steadily developed with the vision of erecting a Metallurgical Process Plant cum Engineering Complex.
It has an Erection Base where all the steel plant equipment and facilities were sub-assembled before erecting them in the plant.
To generate upstream and downstream industrial and economic activities critical to the diversification of the economy of the country into an industrial one. The Plant is therefore aptly tagged as the “bedrock of Nigeria’s industrialization”.
We as a nation have about 64million job deficit which as we speak the said steel plant is in need of 200 Electrical Engineers and 100 Maintenance Staff as the HEROS who have preserved the industry are getting old and need to impact their knowledge on people who will take over from them.
The choice of technology, Blast Furnace – Basic Oxygen Process (BF=BOF) is still the best and the most popular worldwide:
*It remains the most acceptable and applied technology in Iron making process.
*Most established technology.
*Quite Energy efficient.
*Capability of processing even the least acceptable grades of iron ore.
*Quite flexible in operation.
*Easily adaptable to modernization and automation
*Total World Crude Steel Production in year 2014 is 1,662,000,000 Tons.
*Total World Crude Steel Production via Blast Furnace in year 2014 is about 1,200,000,000 Tons Percentage Crude Steel Production Via Blast Furnace is about 72%
Ajaokuta Steel Mill once it starts operation, it has the ability to generate 500,000 direct and in-direct jobs which will take care of the job deficit and better the lives of Nigeria and Nigerians and the nation become self sufficient.
BENEFITS OF AJAOKUTA STEEL MILL TO NIGERIA
Should we come together as a people and demand that the government give a YES to Ajaokuta Steel Mill, the lives of all Nigerians will improve tremendously and the nation will be self sufficient. We MUST fight to get our nation back on track and tap into the wealth of the nation to end poverty in the land.
Ajaokuta Steel Mill also have a school that can graduate 3,000 diploma students annually with technical and practical knowledge where such graduate can start a trade immediately.
We cannot afford to throw away the wealth of our Nation.
